The Madeira archipelago was discovered by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, squire of the house of Henry the Navigator, during the pioneering days of the Portuguese maritime discoveries. The island at which they first came ashore was Porto Santo, in 1419, followed by Madeira in 1420.
